In our interconnected digital age with nearly everyone carrying around a powerful video camera in their pocket, there is no place for poor customer service to hide. At least, that’s how the team at Goldcar must currently be feeling.

A captured encounter between an aggrieved staff member and an angry customer at the Goldcar desk in Sydney Airport has gone viral. On social media, it’s been an opportunity for other people to share examples of bad customer service they’ve experienced with a range of car rental companies at different locations across the globe.

Airports can be stressful places. Cancelled flights, hold-ups at security, and general exhaustion, all combine to create the perfect environment for flare-ups. Car rental companies work hard to ensure a positive customer experience even in demanding conditions.

But in this instance, something went badly wrong…

So how can you reduce the risk of experiencing poor customer service from your rental company?

Cheaper Than Cars allows users to rate their experience with different rental companies. You can see how different operators perform before you book your vehicle. Judging by our users, poor customer service is not the norm.

Goldcar is a popular rental car company in Europe, where our users score them positively when it comes to their customer experience.  It’s a relative newcomer to Australia, with Sydney Airport being their first rental car location.

Whether it’s teething problems in a new location, or just everyone having an off day, this is not the image Goldcar will want to project.

In a highly competitive rental car market, there is definitely such a thing as bad publicity.
